This made me so happy I just about jumped out of my chair. My ‘beloved’ Coke Company announced on Capitol Hill that they along with (RED) and Chevron joined the Global Fight Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. From assistance in drug delivery, to supplying much-needed resources, to mobilizing consumer markets, to in-country partnerships, these mega corporations are giving back. The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is woven into the groups which all play unique and essential roles in partnering with the Global Fund to save and improve lives around the globe.
“Partnerships have been absolutely fundamental to the Global Fund model since its creation,” said Dr. Christoph Benn, Director of Resource Mobilization and Donor Relations for the Global Fund.
Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has become the main financier of programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, with approved funding of US$ 22.6 billion for more than 1,000 programs in 150 countries (as of December 1, 2011). To date, programs supported by the Global Fund are providing AIDS treatment for 3.3 million people, anti-tuberculosis treatment for 8.6 million people and 230 million insecticide-treated nets for the prevention of malaria. The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts in dealing with the three diseases.
So, go out…. buy more Coke products and fill your tank up at Chevron or buy (RED) products knowing some proceeds do ‘make a difference’. I ‘LOVE’ me some tasty coke…. mmmmmm…wonder why Pepsi isn’t on board fighting worldwide diseases?
