boo booLee Thompson, known as Honey Boo Boo’s Uncle Poodle revealed that the results of a recent HIV test have returned with a positive diagnosis. Thompson, who is openly gay that a test in May showed that he was HIV+. I can honestly tell you that I have never seen this show.  But I’ve heard that it is popular for some reason that is beyond my comprehension. The new HIV twist with this story does make it come to light in the media. The question now arises, how does it protray Lee and the issue of HIV/AIDS? Does the show just make fun of the issue or handle it with correct information?

Back to the story. Lee said, “I knew it had been my boyfriend who infected me,” and also stated, “I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it.”  Thompson said he then reluctantly press charges against his ex, who is now servingboo boo uncle a 5-year sentence in prison for not disclosing his HIV status. (each State has different laws regarding passing HIV without a partners consent)

“I would have been cool with his status if he had been honest,” he said. “I don’t have an issue with the disease. I would have known how to protect myself.”

Thompson said his nickname “Uncle Poodle” stems from his niece, Alana Thompson, otherwise known as Honey Boo Boo. He said she calls all gay men “my poodles.” Now, that statement is what we strive to fight everyday with our clients. The stigma that gay men carry. Shows like this make our job harder, because it continues to keep the stigma and discrimination with in the the viewers mind. Reality TV, just when I thought the producers have run out of bad show ideas.
