April is National STD Awareness Month
April is National STD Awareness Month, an annual observance to raise awareness about the impact of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the importance of discussing sexual health with health-care providers and partners. STDs can affect anyone who is sexually active. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 2 sexually active people will acquire an STD, and half of them will not know. There are many sites in Virginia that offer free STD/HIV testing, prevention counseling, and treatment. For more information on STDs or for information on testing and counseling sites, call the Virginia Disease Prevention Hot-line at 1-800-533-4148.
This public service message is brought to you by your friends at ARE. We only test for HIV, so if you’re worried about an STD, contact your medical care provider or local health department. Be safe, not sorry.
