PA School Refuses to Admit HIV+ Student

December 2, 2011 by Tom Thayer in News, State with 0 Comments

This is 2011 and we’re still seeing discrimination against HIV+ individuals.  At Philadelphia, PA Milton Hershey School this is exactly the case.  This private school was founded by the chocolate tycoon as a school that “nurtures and educates children in social and financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives.”  It doesn’t seem to be the case for students with HIV.

“I feel no other teenager should go through this, being denied just because they have HIV,” the boy said. His lawyer has filed a discrimination suit in U.S. District Court that alleges that the Hershey School “violated multiple anti-discrimination laws” by not admitting the boy based on him being HIV Positive.

After all these years, haven’t we learned anything from Ryan White.  The young man who was kicked out of school for having contracted HIV through a blood transfusion.  He later passed but a law was enacted under his name.  There still is a great need of education which is obvious in this case.
