Elton John Holds Gala Event for HIV/AIDS
Elton John held a star-studded gala last night to honor prominent supporters of his AIDS Foundation and he spoke about the latest efforts to prevent the disease and end a continuing stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
Serving as MC for the gala — called ‘An Enduring Vision’ — was CNN anchor and talk show host Anderson Cooper. Among those attending were John’s partner David Furnish, legendary singer Smokey Robinson, Alec Baldwin and New York Mayor Andrew Cuomo to name a few.
The Elton John AIDS Foundation was established nearly two decades ago, John’s global foundation helps raise money for innovative HIV/AIDS prevention programs, as well as efforts to end stigma and discrimination and increase services for people living with the disease. Sir Elton John said that even after all these many years there is still stigma attached to the disease and people are afraid to get tested among others.
We here at ARE still see that exact anwser he gave. The stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS is still present and ongoing. Its a daily battle we face when reaching out to the community we serve. To educate, inform, assist and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

2011 Stories Recap- Amy Winehouse Autopsy Results
The mystery behind the death of British singer Amy Winehouse has finally been solved and revealed. Coroner Suzanne Greenway wrote in her final coroner report that Winehouse died of “misadventure”. She further clarified that is was alcohol poisoning as the confirmed cause of death.
According to the autopsy report just released, alcohol was the cause of the singer’s death. the police detective who investigated Winehouse’s death reported that he saw empty vodka bottles throughout Winehouse’s home. Her blood alcohol level was said to that of 5 times the legal limit at the time of her death.
Winehouse died in her London home on July 23, 2011. The 27-year-old crooner’s death was a mystery at first because her family claimed she was trying to get clean and was sober at the time of her death. The original autopsy report failed to find any illegal drugs in her system. A lot of speculation was that drugs or HIV/AIDS were the cause of death. Amy did lead a life full of ‘misadventure’ by taking so many risks with drugs, alcohol and sharing needles. Poor choices lead to her death like so many in the world. The world will miss her amazing voice & interesting dress. We can only hope someone will take heed of her loss and seek help to avoid getting addicted or contracting HIV/AIDS.

Housing Market Effects Everyone

The housing market continues to slide, homes are being lost not only in the urban cities but even in the rural areas. The increase in the suburbs was 53%, compared with 26% in cities. The recession accelerated the pace: 2/3 of the new suburban poor were added from 2007 to 2010.
Communities are now confronting a new set of issues, namely how to help poor residents without the array of social programs that cities have, and how to get those residents to services without public transportation. Many suburbs are facing these challenges with the tightest budgets in years. The strain on each town’s budget that assists low income individuals is seen through these cut backs even locally. As jobs are being lost, insurances reduced and homes lost, people fall into desperate measures thus their risks are increased to acquire HIV/AIDS.
We here at ARE see the effect of this recession has with our consumers. ARE does its best to assist our consumers with programs like: Ryan White A & B, HOPWA Housing and Free HIV Testing through Virginia Dept of Health.
With no quick fix in sight on the horizon, the US will continue to struggle and HIV/AIDS will increase with the cutbacks. ARE will also continue to do its best with what limited grants we have available.

National Museum of American History Marks 30th Anniversary of HIV and AIDS

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will mark the 30th anniversary of the emergence of what became known as the HIV and AIDS epidemic with a three-part display and website.
“HIV and AIDS Thirty Years Ago” will look at the public health, scientific and political responses in the early phase (1981-87) of the global pandemic. The display will feature photographs, magazine covers and other graphics plus equipment that Dr. Jay Levy used to isolate the virus in his lab at the University of California, San Francisco. The early years of the HIV and AIDS epidemic was a time in our history that affected all Americans,” said Brent D. Glass, the director of the museum. “This display will help visitors understand the scientific mystery, the public health crisis and the political debates created by the epidemic and why these events gripped America 30 years ago.”
Remembering how HIV/AIDS started is more important now since the epidemic seems have taken a back seat in the media and our society. You don’t hear a lot about HIV today but the disease didn’t go away, in fact its growing again.

Occupy Wall Street Protest & HIV/AIDS

What happens during long staged protests? This is exactly what is happening now in New York and other places where “Occupy Wall Street” is going on. Large numbers of young individuals in a passionate frenzy creating social protest.
Some condom companies are offering reduced rates or free condoms at these protests since there will be sexual contact. Most of the people watching the news clips don’t see behind the scenes or what happens.
People are people and things will happen. The biggest concerns are sanitary and health issues for long term protesters. Health officials will need to watch for outbreaks of any STI/STD, along with HIV/AIDS infections that could occur. Expressing yourself and your opinion is one thing, but protecting yourself is vital.

Magic Johnson to Lead HIV/AIDS Conference in Washington DC
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is honored to announce that business mogul and basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Jr. and actor and AIDS advocate Blair Underwood have each signed on to individually endorse the ‘Keep the Promise on HIV/AIDS’ March set to take place in Washington, DC, Sunday, July 22, 2012 immediately before the opening ceremonies of the International AIDS Society’s XIX International AIDS Conference, which is being held in the United States for the first time in more than 20 years. The ‘Keep the Promise’ rally and march—which organizers anticipate will draw thousands of participants—will serve as a clarion call for universal access to AIDS care and treatment. “The ‘Keep the Promise on
HIV/AIDS’ March presents an ideal opportunity for AIDS advocates and organizations the world over to join together and have our collective voices heard to press US and world leaders to do the right thing on AIDS funding, care and treatment.
WHEREAS in the United States:
• The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) spends less than 30% of its HIV prevention budget on HIV testing.
• Over 8,600 low-income people have been placed on waiting lists or disenrolled from AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP).
• The average cost of AIDS medications in the U.S. has increased by 163% over the past 15 years, putting an increased financial burden on ADAP and other programs.
• Washington, DC, the host city of the 2012 International AIDS Conference has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the country at 3%.
